The best sunsets occur during times of cloud but,as you may have noticed,a particular type of cloud makes for better images.The best is mid to high level cloud-this tends to bring out the deep oranges and reds.Very high-level cloud(cirrus) will also provide a colourful background but this tends to produce a more reddy,pink colour.
Low-level cloud tends to result in orange bases but the sunrises aren't normally as spectacular as skies filled with pink or red.
